Mary Akkerman guides clients through all aspects of fiduciary representation, and estate planning, including dynasty trusts, domestic asset protection trusts, estate and trust administration, guardianships and conservatorships, business and tax planning, estate and gift tax planning, tax appeals and related litigation. Mary is skilled at establishing public and private trust companies in South Dakota and also regularly works with U.S. and international families and advisors with respect to cross-border planning, non-resident alien trust formation, and international tax issues.

She was elected to the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC), a national organization of approximately 2,600 lawyers elected to membership by demonstrating the highest level of integrity, commitment to the profession, competence and experience as trust and estate counselors.

Experience
  • Obtained state charters for private family trust companies for ultra high net worth families and assisted in formation of trust company entities, policies and procedures, and trust administration matters.
  • Regularly represents trustees in defense of high-stakes cases involving fiduciary claims.
  • Regularly represents interested parties in contested trust, estate, guardianship and conservatorship matters.
  • Appointed as personal representative by local judge to assist in resolution of contested estate.
  • Appointed guardian ad litem at the request of a corporate trustee to represent disabled beneficiaries in complex court-supervised transactions.
  • Appointed as court representative by local judge to assist court in resolution of contested guardianship and conservatorship matter.
  • Regularly assists out-of-state families, attorneys, and family advisors in reviewing South Dakota trusts and locating or working with local trustees to effect change of situs, reform or modify trusts, and decant trust assets.

You may use the wildcard symbol (*) as a root expander.  A search for "anti*" will find not only "anti", but also "anti-trust", "antique", etc.

Entering two terms together in a search field will behave as though an "OR" is being used.  For example, entering "Antique Motorcars" as a Client Name search will find results with either word in the Client Name.

Operators

AND and OR may be used in a search.  Note: they must be capitalized, e.g., "Project AND Finance." 

The + and - sign operators may be used.  The + sign indicates that the term immediately following is required, while the - sign indicates to omit results that contain that term. E.g., "+real -estate" says results must have "real" but not "estate".

To perform an exact phrase search, surround your search phrase with quotation marks.  For example, "Project Finance".

Searches are not case sensitive.
