For more than 27 years, David has been practicing in the areas of intellectual property litigation, arbitration, and commercial litigation. He has litigated, arbitrated and mediated cases in state and federal trial and appellate courts throughout the United States involving:
- Intellectual property in the form of patents, trademarks, trade dress, trade secrets, and copyrights, as well as related issues of unfair competition
- Issues regarding contractual obligations and the Uniform Commercial Code relating to medical devices, software, computer systems, and sales of various products in the electronics manufacturing, heavy equipment and other industries
David also helps clients identify and address contractual and commercial issues and disputes, general intellectual property protection and strategy, and intellectual property licensing.
As a member of the American Arbitration Association’s Commercial Panel, he has been appointed an arbitrator in over 50 commercial arbitrations including intellectual property disputes involving licenses, patents, and trade secrets related to medical devices, manufacturing operations and methods; warranty issues involving computer systems and high-tech equipment; disputes involving sales of businesses; and other commercial matters.
As a mediator, David has successfully mediated dozens of cases ranging from patent, trademark, copyright and other commercial disputes to disputes in virtually all areas of civil law, having been appointed by the court to mediate a myriad of different kinds of cases.
A former chair of Lindquist & Vennum’s Commercial Litigation and Intellectual Property practice groups, David currently chairs the firm’s Litigation Department. He also serves on the firm’s Executive Committee.
David began his career as a judicial law clerk in U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota.
