Jim is a business trial lawyer and a partner at Lindquist & Vennum. He is the former long-time chair of the firm’s Insurance Recovery practice group. His “AV” rating from Martindale-Hubbell and inclusion in Super Lawyers attest to his skills and professionalism, as well as the trust clients and other professionals place in him.

For over 20 years, Jim has concentrated his practice on counseling upper Midwest and mountain-states businesses about their insurance and representing policyholders in complex insurance-coverage disputes. He assists businesses with insurance, renewals, non-renewals, policy comparisons, extended reporting endorsements (“tail” coverage), coverage opinions, claims, notices of claims, and insured losses.

In response to recent elevated concern by directors and management, Jim has provided extensive advice to businesses and board members about management liability and directors’ and officers’ insurance coverage. He also counsels businesses about insurance implications of mergers and acquisitions and other major transactions. He has often attended clients’ board meetings to gain perspectives on their organizations and advise directors and officers about insurance.

Jim has handled nationally prominent insurance-coverage cases, including one of the first intellectual property or “advertising injury” insurance coverage cases. He was formerly a Minnesota State Bar Association Certified Civil Trial Specialist for 24 years, and frequently writes and speaks on the topic of insurance coverage.

Jim has litigated on behalf of clients or counseled them about a wide array of insurance lines, including claims and losses arising out of commercial general liability; directors’ and officers’ liability; professional liability; employment practices liability; trademark, trade dress and copyright infringement liability; product liability; business interruption; property; commercial crime and bond losses.

In addition to insurance coverage, Jim’s background includes extensive commercial litigation in other areas, as well as counseling on general business matters.
